NATIONAL ANTHEM OF LITHUANIA
Flag of Lithuania

National Hymn

by Vincas Kudirka

Lithuania, land of heroes,
Thou our Fatherland that art,
From the glorious deeds of ages
Shall Thy children take heart.

May Thy children ever follow
Their heroic fathers
In devotion to their country
And good will to others.

May the sun of our loved shore
Shine upon us evermore;
May the right and the truth
Keep our pathway lighted.

May the love of our dear land
Make us strong of heart and hand,
May our land ever stand
Peaceful and united.

National Hymn

by Vincas Kudirka

Lithuania, my homeland, land of heroes!
Let your Sons draw strength from the past.
Let your children follow only the paths of virtue,
working for the good of their native land and for all mankind.

Let the sun banish all darkness from Lithuania,
with light and truth always guiding our steps.
Let the love of Lithuania burn in our hearts
and for the sake of our country let unity blossom.

LIETUVOS HIMNAS
Vincas Kudirka

Tautiška giesmė

Lietuva, tėvyne mūsų,
Tu didvyrių žeme,
Iš praeities Tavo sūnūs
Te stiprybę semia.

Tegul Tavo vaikai eina
Vien takais dorybės,
Tegul dirba Tavo naudai
Ir žmonių gėrybei.

Tegul saulė Lietuvoj
Tamsumus prašalina
Ir šviesa, ir tiesa
Mūs žingsnius telydi.

Tegul meilė Lietuvos
Dega mūsų širdyse,
Vardan tos Lietuvos
Vienybė težydi.

Vincas Kudirka (1858-1899) was one the ideologists of the Lithuanian national movement, editor of prohibited newspaper "Varpas" ("The Bell"), publicist, poet. In 1898, in this newspaper, he published the "National Hymn" (text and notes), which became the national anthem of Lithuania later. Kudirka is also the author of the melody of the anthem. The anthem was performed publicly for the first time in 1905 in the Vilnius City Theatre. In 1940, after the Soviet occupation, the anthem was prohibited, but in 1944 through the efforts of Justas Paleckis the "National Hymn" of Vincas Kudirka was recognised as an official anthem of the Lithuanian SSR and preserved this status until July, 1950. Then it was replaced by a typical Soviet anthem, glorifying Stalin and the Communist Party. Since 1988 the "National Hymn" became the official anthem of Lithuania again.
