,,THE FORMATION OF THE LITHUANIAN STATE”:
The opinions, expressed writing the book

Defending the Bachelor and Master degree at the Vilnius University in 1996 and 1998

RESEARCH ADVISERS

OPONENTS

Associate Prof., Dr. Stasys PAMERNECKIS (1996):

"Systemised critical analysis of the possessed sources and historiography lets the researchers of this problem much more objectively look at the formation of the Lithuanian State and the functioning of the GDL in the period before Mindaugas."

Associate Prof., Dr. Zigmantas Kiaupa (1996):

"The essence is this - the level of the work is very high. Walking through the sharp edges of hypotheses, the author knows, where he is, and is trying not to slide off.”

Dr. Gintautas ZABIELA (1998)

Prof., Dr. habil. Stanislovas LAZUTKA (1998):

"The main question of the problem is not answered or answered erroneously. The author is trying to picture the process of the formation of the state as a result. From the methodological point of view the worst is that the candidate to the master degree is subjugating the interpretation of all sources to the to the idea, which was formed tendentiously beforehand."

From the discussion between the author and Prof., Dr. Habil. Edvardas Gudavičius in 1994-1995

Tomas BARANAUSKAS

Edvardas GUDAVIČIUS

The formation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Voruta, 1994, No. 4-6):

"Looking for the real turning point, we must stop namely at the limit of the last two decades of the 12th century, because only since then the Lithuanian raids started. That it isn't an accidental date, we can be convinced by some sources on Lithuania of the 12th century.”

Concerning the formation of the Lithuanian State (Voruta, 1994, Nr. 12-14)::

"A big work is going on in the Vilnius University. The students are growing up. (...) They don't want to work, but want to make discoveries. New serious works are rarely appearing, while the Mikaldian literature is growing like on the yeast. Here so diligent man as T. Baranauskas is seized by it as well. It's a pity, but it is so.”

When did Lithuania unite? (Voruta, 1995, Nr. 25-27)::

"The hypothesis about the creation of the Lithuanian State in the times of Mindaugas exists more than 100 years, but already very early its correctness became questionable. And there is no wander, because this hypothesis is not grounded by serious arguments. In my opinion it has no future.”

Once again concerning the formation of the Lithuanian State (Voruta, 1995, Nr. 40-47)::

"Already the first article by T. Baranauskas went astray to the fields of parahistory. I discussed it, because I thought that I am dealing with a student historian, as he signs. The second his article shows no changes for the rational thinking. That means that I made a mistake, because usually the parahistorical scribbles are considered not worth answering. This year S. Pivoras very aptly noted that the parahistorians are trying to provoke answers, striving to show that they are also of some importance.”
