Tomas Baranauskas, Lietuvos valstybės ištakos, Vilnius: Vaga, 2000, 317 p., 35 fig.
The author of the book wants to present the most
correct answer to one of the most essential questions of the Lithuanian
history: when did the Lithuanian State appear? Strictly criticising "mistaken
paths" of the traditional historiography - one of its representatives
Edvardas Gudavičius, of course - Tomas Baranauskas tries to find earlier
beginning of the Lithuanian State. According to him, some early state
formations of the Lithuanians appeared in the 11th century and in 1183
they were united into the state, called by the author the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania. Proving that the Lithuanian State existed since the first
Lithuanian goes very difficult. The author presents a lot of "bare"
statements and conclusions, and therefore the main thesis of the research
about the appearance of the Lithuanian State in the 11-12th centuries
remains unproved.
